ETHProofs: Ethereum and ZK are About to Collide

"April 25th is an important day in zkVM history" - @portport255, Core Contributor at @the_matter_labs

The momentum behind @ethereum's enshrinement initiative keeps building, and today is the first time that the top zkVM teams will come together to discuss the path forward and showcase what they can offer to @eth_proofs. As of now, teams like @Snarkify_ZKP, @ProjectZKM, @SuccinctLabs&@KakarotZkEvm have been actively proving Ethereum blocks, with 15+ more soon set to join.

At its core, ETHProofs aims to introduce real-time (sub 12 second) validity proofs for Ethereum blocks, making proving as integral to the network as block production itself - a complete shift in how Ethereum will secure itself and process transactions.

The recent activity around @VitalikButerin's proposals shows just how serious the @ethereumfndn is about this shift. He’s floated replacing the EVM with RISC-V to massively simplify and accelerate zero-knowledge proofs at the base layer - a move that could push scalability orders of magnitude further. While the proposal sparked debate across the community - from Succinct’s full support, to ZKM's counter-argument for using MIPS instead, and others like @StarkWareLtd and @0xLita pushing for a custom ISA - it’s clear that RISC-V is now a first-class citizen in Ethereum’s roadmap. But what isn't currently clear is exactly why, and also what this could ultimately mean for the future of L2's.

Despite the clear feeling of immediate competition between zkVMs, it’s obvious that the whole field is still barely getting started. Prover performance, aggregation pipelines, proof-carrying data systems - all of it is going to improve exponentially from here, and initiatives like ETHProof's are really helping to fuel the fire.

To keep pushing this conversation forward, we’re hosting an exclusive ETHProofs-focused event during Berlin Blockchain Week - The ETHProofs Summit - a real chance to unpack the hard questions no one’s asking, hear from the teams actually building the infrastructure, and seriously interrogate what ETHProofs will mean for Ethereum's future.

ZK is still a sleeping giant when it comes to mainstream hype, but for anyone paying attention, the writing is already on the wall. ETHProofs is one of the clearest signals yet that Ethereum is betting its future on ZK (frankly, it’s about time).

And you can be sure that once ETHProofs proves its effectiveness at making ZK more efficient, the other major blockchains will follow.
